Family Owned Business Award: Slide Ridge Honey
We all have childhood dreams of what we want to do when we grow up, and Martin James dreamed of being a beekeeper. At age 8, he tried to enroll in a beekeeping class at Utah State University, but the professor said he was too young. After he pleaded with his mother for a year, she enrolled in the class, and Martin happily attended with her. Martin enjoyed beekeeping as a hobby for more than two decades.
He was installing flooring for a living when, in 2004, he and his family decided to launch Slide Ridge and turn that lifelong passion into the family business. Martin, his parents and three siblings—Kelli, Karla and Mike—all work here.

Event of the Year Award: Bike with Brent - Cache Employement & Training Center
"Bike with Brent" is an annual event that has been held in June for the past seven years. The goals of the event serve two purposes. One is to raise community awareness about both the needs and the potential of people with disabilities. Secondly, it is a fundraiser for Cache Employment and Training Center, a local non-profit that has supported people with disabilities for 55 years in Cache Valley.
Brent Carpenter is a local celebrity who is the face of "Bike with Brent" each year. Brent is an example to us all through his determination to live an independent life. In spite of his disability Brent worked for many years, lives in his own apartment, and has a tremendous impact on our community. Everyone knows Brent as he rides his bike and honks and waves at everyone or when he carried the torch into the USU stadium for the Olympics. Brent is a part of every community event.
CETC works everyday helping people like Brent to reach their potential and to share their gifts with all of us. Cache Valley has been very supportive of Bike with Brent and we appreciate your support.”
